technology showcase
This page is dedicated to displaying some of my work centered around the use of technology. Throughout the pursuit of the MAET degree, I was able to utilize my knowledge and skills in the area of technology to create various resources for different classes that I have taught over the last five-plus years. I have found that using many hands-on activities and incorporating different technologies are key elements to getting my students actively involved in their learning.
PreziCreating this Prezi was one useful tool that I created was to help students learn about the processes of transcription and translation in AP Biology. I created this with the idea that the user is able to visit the inside of a cell and see these processes at work within the various cellular structures. By taking this "trip", the learner has a better understanding of the sequencing and location of the two vital processes.

Web ResourceThis is a web tutorial that builds on the topics of transcription and translation. The Prezi was used to introduce these two concepts, and this constructed tutorial provides additional resources for students to refer to as they work toward mastering the concepts. I put this site together for CEP 817: Learning Technology by Design.

glogster poster

As a self introduction to my TE 846 Accomodating Differences in Literacy Learners classmates, I created a Glogster poster. I really liked this idea compared to the usual introduction of writing a paragraph or two in a chat room. Included in my poster is the following:
1) A brief introduction of myself that is not academically focused.
2) A brief synopsis of my academic and recent work/teaching history.
3) My experience with struggling readers and writers.
4) Literacy related challenges that I in my own teaching situation.
5) What I hoped to learn in this class.

Teaching the metric system with technology

This was my introduction to creating podcasts and ways to incorporate them into a classroom setting. As part of the Stand Alone Instructional Resource (StAIR) project, I created a PowerPoint and an accompanying podcast to help students master the metric system and converting between different units. A third component, the creation of a VoiceThread, was also a part of this project. The podcast was used to describe the VoiceThread portion of the project and the issues I had to check on before implementing this project.
facebook parody
For this particular assignment, I created a Facebook conversation between several important researchers and contributors to educational philosopy. In the discussion posts, each member is providing insight as to their own perspectives and beliefs on how learning takes place. A short summary follows each series of posts. I have utilized this approach in my science classes by having students create facebook posts and tweets to summarize ideas and concepts. It is a way to incorporate the ideas behind social media (cooperative learning and social interactions), but it can be done without computers and the filter issues that I encounter with social media sites on the school's network.
